An exercise in basic 3D modelling and algorithmic design. The task was to design a tile inspired by natural forms and fabricate it using advanced manufacturing processes. The tile combines two naturally occurring forms. The complex geometry of the hexagonal prismatic cells, derived from beehives and honeycombs, juxtaposes the pure geometry of the undulating water ripple. The result is something that resembles middle eastern or Islamic art through its use of symmetry and tessellation. The final tile was CNC milled from a block of polyurethane foam, cast with silicone rubber, and then cast again with ceramic.
